1. Fabric. You will need the following: 1 piece of fabric 25 inches (63.5 cm) long and 18 inches (46 cm) wide for the outside. 1 piece of fabric the same measurements for the lining, 1 piece of quilters fleece the same measurements for the interlining. You also need 1 piece of fabric for the pockets 23 inches (58.5 cm) long by 18 inches (46 cm) wide. For the handles you need 2 pieces of fabric 43.8 inches (111 cm) long 3.5 inches (9 cm) wide
2. Make the handles. Fold the fabric long ways, wrong sides together, and press the fold. Refold so that the edges of the fabric meet in the centre at the ironed edge. Re-iron. Fold over again so that the edges are caught in the middle. Stitch along both sides of the handles.
3. Attach handles to the outside fabric. Measure in 5 inches (13 cm) from both long edges and 9 inches (23 cm) from both narrower edges. (The long edges are the sides of the bag and the narrower edges are the tops of the bag)
4. Stitch along both sides of the handles and across the top and bottom. Leave 2 inches (5 cm) between the top stitching of the handles and the top of the bag.
5. Take the pocket fabric and fold it so the two long sides are folded into the middle right sides together. Stitch along both raw edges. Turn the right side and press.6. Place the pocket piece- right side up- in the absolute centre of the lining fabric. Pin around the pocket.
7. Now mark the centre of the pocket with a line right across the fabric parallel with the bag top. Measure 2 inches on either side of the central line and mark’ Stitch from the top of the pocket along one side, along the 2 inch line and up the other side. Stitch another line in the middle to make 2 pockets. Turn and sew the other side of the pocket exactly the same.

8. Make a fabric sandwich. Place the fleece on the bottom; place the lining next right side up, place the top wrong side up (so the right side is touching the right side of the lining). Carefully pin all layers together making sure the handles are kept away from the stitching area.
9. Stitch right around the bag through all layers leaving a small gap to turn the bag right side out.10. Turn out and press.
11. Match tops together with right side fronts together. Stitch down both sides of the taking care to catch the small opening into the seam.
12. Press the side seams open flat and stitch around the top of bag.
13. Push the bottom of the bag flat and match the side seams to the centre bottom of the bag. Mark a line half an inch from the pocket fabric. Stitch on this line on both sides.
14. Cut some bottom base to fit the ‘pocket’ across the bottom. Insert the grid into the pocket and turn the bag the right side out.
15. Attach Velcro to the top inside either by sewing or by using Fabric Fusion Velcro which can be just ironed on.

Hi I love the bag- thanks for the tutorial, you make it all seem so easy!
What a great tutorial! Thanks so much for sharing! :)
I love your tutorials! We must have the same brain because I am following right along and wish everyone's tutorials were written like yours!! :)
Just finished my first bag (my first sewing project done by myself)! Thanks so much for an easy tutorial. (That's a link to the bag I created.)
I just finished making this bag and have a few comments:
* the straps in the final product are definitely longer than the straps described in the pattern pieces. I would estimate about 30 cms longer
* The pocket instructions are difficult to follow (or are incorrect). Fold the shorter edges to the middle and sew the outside raw edges.
* There is no explanation of how to join/finish the straps. I would sew them together after ironing (to form a full circle).
Otherwise I am pleased and found the pattern quite easy.
someone please help! the pockets are totally confusing me...any suggestions
I am very new to sewing but am expecting a new addition to the family in 6 weeks. Although I still plan to buy a dyper bag incasae I messs this up compleatly I am going to give it a sure fire try! Only I think that I am going to see what I can do to make a fire truck theme with his name on it some how put my own touch on it! Thank you for such detailed instructions hopefuly it will all turn out the way I am hopeing for!
Thank you so much for the great tutorial! I'm a bag-making-newbie and I started today. I guess I'm on the right way!
Fantastic tutorial! Thanks
I found the tutorial easy to follow and the pictures are very clear. My only problem is that the bag is a little small for my needs so I'm going to make another one that's larger. Thanks for sharing these instructions!
This was a fun project! I started out by making a smaller version of fabric I already had lying around. Now I'm ready to make an even bigger one! Practice makes perfect! Thanks for the tutorial...
hi there! just wondering if there is a way to customize the pockets a little more? I cloth diaper my son and I'm having a hard time finding a diaper bag with big enough pockets for his diapers-and one with a nice sized bottle pocket on the inside too! Is there any way to change the pocket pattern to make some of the pockets a little bigger and some a little smaller?
I am also a little confused on the straps. And is there a way to view the pictures close up? Or is that the only size? I am having trouble understanding about the pockets too. Which edge and I going to sew?
I love it ! Very creative ! That's actually really cool Thanks.
This turned out so good!!! I adjusted the sizes a bit so I could make this for a special little girl for her dolls. Thoroughly impressed everyone, thank you for such an awesome pattern.
Sweet! I just made this tonight with fabric and other materials on hand! Thanks so much!
I agree that the pockets are a bit confusing - as evidenced by my finished product! My pockets were the full length of the bag and quite short so I think something is backwards about the layout. That also left me without a pocket ot put the base in. Otherwise, great tutorial! I did improve mine by making 2 small pockets which sit between the straps on the outside - straps go over them, but then the ends of the straps tucked under the pocket when sewn to be more "finished". I used cute Thomas the Train fabric to make this for my grandson's mom. Can't wait to make a small one for my daughter's dolls & a bigger one for me. I did manage to break 5 needles when sewing since the end product was quite thick with all the layers. Thanks!
Cute diaper bag! Thanks for the tutorial. My daughter is pregnant and "requesting" that I make her a diaper bag! This looks like a good one!
Hi! Thanks so much for the tutorial, I thought you might want to see my finished product. I am very new to sewing, and this is one of the first things I've made - so thatnks for the simple tutorial (although it did take me a while to undertand what was going on with the pockets!)

Thanks!
This tutorial is very confusing and the directions don't really seem to match the pictures.
It took me only 3 hrs from start to finish after I carefully read the directions. Wonderful bag, fairly easy directions. I agree that on the "making the inside pockets" instructions, it should be the shorter sides go towards the middle. this gives you wider pockets. The way it is written I have deep narrow pockets. I also put outside pockets between the straps ( using the straps to hols the pocket sides) and tucked the bottom of the straps under to give a more finished look. Thanks so much for this tutorial!
